%X The Amazon is one of the worlds most important ecosystem and is under constant threat. In Rondônia this situation is not different, and the state has only 59% of its original forest. It is important to investigate the land use and cover change (LUCC) in order to define strategies that stimulate both environmental conservation and regional development. This paper aims to identify, spatialize and qualify the LUCC with 10-years interval, using the Machado river watershed as case study. Maps developed by TerraClass Project (2004 and 2014) were the basis to quantify LUCC. The maps were overlaid and resulted in a map of landscapes dynamic, which was valued following a matrix that qualified the land use/cover transitions according to their environmental characteristics, in a use-conservation gradient, from very negative to positive. Within 10 years, the Machado river watershed lost 4.561km² of its original forest area (12%), 3.924km² to pasture. At the same time, data showed a growth in agricultural area (+173%) close to the municipality of Vilhena and a recovery of secondary vegetation (+183%). When evaluating the dynamics qualification is possible to observe the prevalence of changes opposed to conservation diffuse all over the watershed, with a higher concentration and intensity in Machadinho dOeste region. In addition, areas under legal protection comprise most of the consolidated forest fragments and show fewer dynamics. Although a preliminary study, it can be concluded that these protected areas play an important role in controlling deforestation and maintaining the forest.
